1. Classification Based On Convention
Conventionally, there are two basic categories of piles- sheet piles and bearing piles.
- Sheet piles are temporary or permanent piles for buildings. The main function of sheet piles is to provide retention to the earth and support the excavation process. In addition, these sheet piles can be used as bulkheads to retain soil and water, which provides a sturdy base for the buildings. In sheet piles, thin sheets of steel are interlocked and driven into the ground vertically on which construction is supposed to be carried out. This is done by the use of power hammers or vibrators.
- The other kind of conventional piling, bearing piles, is columns that support buildings. These columns are placed to transmit the Foundation’s load downward towards deeper, sturdier rocks and soil.
2. Classification Based On Structural Behavior
Based on the structural behavior, piles can be classified as friction piles or end-bearing piles.
- Friction piles make use of friction to transfer the load of the building directly to the soil and rocks surrounding them. Since friction depends upon the surface in contact, the load supported by a friction pile is directly proportional to its length.
- End bearing piles are laid deeper in the earth embedded in the soil or the rocks. Their far end rests on a bed of sturdy rocks or soil, which gives them support. They work on the principle that the firm layer beneath the earth would provide much stronger support than the weaker upper layers.
Continuous Flight auguring or CFA Piling is a new technique that is rapidly being used to create a foundation piled with concrete.
The CFA piling process is greatly in demand because it is virtually vibration-free and one of the quietest forms of piling. CFA piling is suitable for constructing piles in almost all types of landforms- gravel, sand, silt, clay, soft rocks, etc.
